Goal Setting that Works-The 3 P's of Success

Updated: Jan 27, 2020

With the start of a new year and a new decade, the goal-setting season is in full force. There are old habits to be broken and new ones to be formed. There are hopes and dreams to be achieved.

Friends to be made. There is excitement in the air.

All too often, that excitement evaporates in the routine of life, and we find ourselves quickly returning to the same patterns and habits we wish to change. We give up so quickly on our own success but fail to hold ourselves accountable for our part in the failure. We wish for the reward of change but aren’t willing to put in the work it takes to bring about the change. We see the future that we want, we just don’t have the vision to reach for it.

Perhaps it is a fear of failure. Or a fear of what others will think. Maybe it is even a fear of success itself. Maybe it is too hard or too time-consuming. Whatever the excuse for stopping, it is truly nothing more than that. Just an excuse. The life of your dreams is there for the taking. The only question is, how bad do you really want it? How hard are you willing to work?

There is no better time to commit to your success than now. New year. New Decade. New you. It is time to set goals, create a vision for your future, and go after them with purpose, passion, and perseverance. What I like to call the 3 p’s of success.

First, and perhaps most important, is having a purpose. Knowing what your why is and having something meaningful to believe in is so important in preventing the early excitement of change from evaporating. Make sure each idea and decision you make is done with a true and clear idea of what you want the outcome to be. Find a planner that motivates and inspires you, write down your goals, and read them aloud every day. Let your why and your purpose guide your choices and you will begin to see changes that are truly meaningful.

Secondly, choose goals and create visions that you are passionate about. Passion keeps you involved. Passion creates excitement. It may sound cliché, but when you do and strive for things that you are passionate about, those things do not feel like work. And if you really think about it, why would we choose to do things that we do not enjoy or are not passionate about? Find what you are passionate about. Find what excites you. Find what gives you meaning. When you add passion to your purpose, success is at your fingertips.

Last, but not least, is perseverance. While purpose and passion will help provide the why and the motivation, perseverance will help ensure your success. No matter how purposeful and passionate you are with your actions, there will come a time when things do not work out as you planned. Moments when your goals and dreams fill farther away than the day you made them. It is these moments that determine your success and create your story. Never let a set-back dim your desire to succeed. Rise up, work harder, and make your goals reality.

In this new year and new decade, I challenge you to create goals you are passionate about. I challenge you to be purposeful in your actions and take control of the direction you want your life to go. I encourage you to find like-minded, motivated, inspiring people to share your journey with. I encourage you to believe.
